Our main field of research is the sociology of science, which is the sociological subdiscipline interested in the connection between the conditions of knowledge production and the properties of the produced knowledge. For the sociology of science, the production of scientific knowledge is accomplished in a collective process, where largely autonomous members of scientific communities develop a common knowledge base. It is exploring the interplay of the individual and collective level of knowledge production, the differences between research practices and social structures of different disciplines and possible ways of influencing the content of research. Empirical sociological research primarily utilizes ethnography and qualitative interviews and less frequently, standardized surveys or bibliometric methods.
