Markus Hoffmann (MA) is a social scientist focussing on science and technology research and Japanese culture. He studied at the University of Vienna and at Hosei University (Tokyo). In his master's thesis, he dealt with university rankings in Japan and how they influence students' understanding of universities and their quality.

He started working as a research assistant at TU Berlin in 2020 in the DFG project "FUFAF - Functions and consequences of unemployment in the careers of researchers". Subject-specific forms of dealing with and effects of phases of unemployment in academic careers are examined. Of particular interest is the influence of these phases on the content and practices of knowledge production.
